Brockham Choral Society is seeking a Musical Director to start from September 2025.  We are a non-auditioning choir based in Dorking, Surrey, and present 3 concerts a year, mostly in St Martin’s Church, Dorking.  These concerts are well supported by the local community.  We are used to performing a wide range of music, from baroque to 21st century, often with an orchestra, though from time to time we present a café-style informal concert with a lighter repertoire.  The choir has 65 members and rehearses on Tuesday evenings from September to June.

MD Post Specification The main job of the MD is to continue the development of the musical abilities and potential of the choir, to ensure that our music making is a joyful experience, and to lead us to new works whilst continuing to perform some of the established classical ones;  in addition, the MD will work with the choir to enhance its appeal to audiences and new members.

In addition to choosing the repertoire (in association with the Music Selection Committee and the Management Committee) we would want the MD to fix any soloists and instrumentalists.  Fees are of course negotiable; some MDs prefer a yearly remuneration, others per rehearsal/concert.  The appointment would be for three years in the first instance, with yearly re-appointment if both sides are content.

The MD is responsible for rehearsing the Society on a weekly basis. If the MD is unable to attend a rehearsal or concert, he/she is responsible for arranging for a suitably qualified substitute to carry out any of his/her duties.

The MD will be an ex-officio member of the Management Committee and would be expected to attend at least one meeting of the Management Committee a year for discussion of items such as concerts, repertoire, costs of musicians etc.  The MD will be a full member of the Society’s Music Selection Committee which discusses the future concert programme and makes recommendations to the Management Committee.

The Musical Director may rehearse the Society and conduct it in one or more concerts in relation to an occasional tour.  The arrangements for this will be agreed separately.

The Musical Director is engaged by the Society on a self-employed basis and is responsible for meeting all income tax, National Insurance and personal pension costs.

The closing date is Friday 28 February with interviews in Dorking in the week beginning 24 March, and auditions on the evenings of 15 and 22 April.  If more information is required about this vacancy, please email on brockhamchoral@gmail.com
